Writing a resume is difficult when you lack work experience or the training required to do a specific job. However, even when you have experience and/or training, putting the words down on paper can still prove a challenging task.
We recommend breaking down your resume-writing into two components:
Prep Day
Typing Day
Prep Day
What is your job goal? Have you narrowed this down to the industry? The particular employer? The more research you do, the better your resume will look.
Now that you’ve thought about your goal, allow yourself some time to think about the skills you think you need to have for your goal. For example, if you want to start at a “ABC Salon and Spa” as a receptionist, ask yourself, “what skills does that receptionist need to have?”
Let’s brainstorm…a good receptionist…
has a friendly demeanour and a welcoming smile
knows about services and products sold
is able to answer questions from clients
needs to work well with people
knows basic math
is able to use point of sales and booking systems
has good phone manners
ensures the clean maintenance of the facility
supports the team
Now that we’ve thought about the skills you would need for that particular position, ask yourself:
“What skills do I have that relate?”
Don’t focus so much on your duties at your previous job, as much as the skills you applied there.
If you have little to no work experience, think about skills you may use on your free time. What are your hobbies? Do they include particular skills?
Now that we have a list of your skills to pick from for later, our second task is to think about the personality traits required for your goal.
For example, a good receptionist has the following traits:
friendly
punctual
organized
intuitive
research-oriented
Now that you’ve thought about the traits you would need for that particular position, ask yourself, “what traits do I have that relate?”
Typing Day
Now that you have well-though-out ideas, organizing them into a resume will be a breeze!
Types of Resumes
Chronological resume- your best bet if you have sufficient experience and the training required for your objective
Functional resume- an excellent choice for those with little to no work experience
Combo resume- best for those with skills from another industry not related to your job goal

Service Providers who wish to start a beauty school or teach esthetics, hairstyling, or massage therapy in Alberta have different ways of becoming a beauty educator. It comes down to what one’s teaching goals are. While your field of expertise plays a large role in your career path, there are certain steps that you will need to take in order to start offering beauty training courses.
Step 1- Creating a business plan
Even though educating and empowering others is at the core of your business idea, it’s nevertheless a business and must be treated as such from the start. Make sure to develop the not-so-sexy parts of your business plan as well, such as industry research.
Step 2- Creating a syllabus
Once you have developed your business plan, you can focus on creating your syllabus. Your syllabus is the outlined plan of all the topics you will include in your course/program. If you are creating a syllabus for technical skills that falls under the supervision of a governing body, such as hairstyling, you will have to meet their specific requirements in your program.
However, not all beauty industry occupations have a governing body in Alberta, Canada. When this is the case, it is up to the beauty educator to ensure they are including all necessary topics in their training courses to maintain industry standards, or perhaps elevate standards.
Step 3- Filling in the details
Once you have your ‘skeleton’, you can zoom into the nitty gritty of your daily lesson plans. Filling your entire day every day for the length of your course or program is a monumental challenge. Further still is the challenge of keeping them engaged all day long. Plus, to be an excellent beauty educator you must be able to recognize different learning styles in order to adapt your lesson plans to benefit each individual.
Not only do students absorb theory components of a curriculum differently, they have different fine motor capabilities. This makes keeping the flow of the technical component burdensome. However, having the ability to design a practicum curriculum that promotes skill development can help reduce inefficiencies during this high value portion of your training course.
For many, figuring out which licenses and permits are needed to start a beauty school or training course in Alberta, Canada can send them into a tizzy! In all fairness, the information is overwhelming and not everyone has to follow the same rules. As a result, service providers who wish to teach esthetics, hairstyling, or massage therapy in Alberta have different paths to follow in reaching their goal of opening their own beauty school.
Follow the recommendations above and you will be closer to starting your own beauty school, or teach esthetics, hairstyling, or massage therapy in Alberta.
You must be at least 18 years old to enter into this contract.
The fact is that you enter into a legal contract with federal and provincial governments when you access student loans. This is why at minimum you have to be 18 years old, depending on the status you are applying as.
There are 3 status options: Dependent, Independent, Special Independent.
Dependent refers to the applicant being dependent on their parents. In other words, they still live at home and are not financially responsible for household operations. Dependent students must be 18 years of age to be eligible for student loans.
Independent status is reserved for applicants who have a dependent child or are married or in a common law relationship. Independent students must be 23 years of age to be eligible for student loans.
Special independent status is granted to applicants who live at home with their parents and would normally be considered ‘dependent’, but they meet some special consideration. Examples of special consideration include a breakdown in the relationship with the family, when a student is financially responsible of another person, or when a student in in government care.
What is the average cost of beauty school diploma?
Diploma programs are comprised of a series of courses related to a particular subject. You will see shorter diploma programs in hairstyling and esthetics than you do in Massage Therapy. On average, hairstyling programs range from mid 30 to 60 weeks, and cost around $16,000. Esthetics diplomas typically range between 30- 40 weeks and cost on average $14,000.
Other options that lead to less debt.
Beauty school definitely has its pros and is the only option for some students. Diploma programs often offer student loans which are an attractive method of paying for your studies. Learn now, pay later.
However, other options exist that do not lead to debt. Those interested in hairstyling should learn more about the apprenticeship pathway. As for people interested in becoming estheticians, you can take smaller courses and proceed at your own pace. In other words, master one skill at a time. Take the money you earned from that skill, and invest in training for another. 🙂
