Accessing government student loans for your beauty studies

Can hair and esthetics students access government loans?

In short, yes, hair and esthetics students can access government loans. However, not every program/course available to students offers the option.

So many courses to choose from!

If you haven’t noticed, there is a plethora of beauty industry courses to choose from. Whatever your final destination is in the beauty industry, you have multiple paths you can take to get there. For example, you can start slow and take one course at a time. Technical training usually last from one to four days. It is common for trainers to share the theory component with students one to two weeks before the technical training takes place.

Not all beauty courses offer a technical component. Covid brought a rise of online beauty courses that persist today.

Learn at your pace

While hair is a regulated industry in Alberta, esthetics is not. Therefore, short courses can kickstart a career in personal care services. After acquiring a clientele, you can take other courses to add to your service menu. Before you know it, you have become a fully licensed esthetician, and you did it at your own pace 😉

Learn on the job

Learning on the job is another option for both, hair and esthetics. Learning on the job for hair students is called an apprenticeship. Because hairstylists are regulated in Alberta, apprenticeships are monitored closely to maintain industry standards. While you still have to attend technical training at some point of your apprenticeship, it is a sliver of time and costs a fraction of attending a full time program.

Learn full/part time in school

This last option is the only option that offers the capacity for student loans. However, not every trainer that offers full and part time programs offers government student loans in Alberta. Fortunately though, people looking for full time studies have a few options for trainers in Alberta that offer government student loans.

If accessing government loans is the only option for you to pay for schooling, keep in mind that you yourself have to be eligible for student loans.

Life AFTER Esthetics training

What happens after you complete your esthetics training?

Executive Spa Group provides all students with career and employment resources to guide them in their beauty industry careers.

Starting your first job after beauty school can be daunting. You may find that your spa job may be different than what you were expecting. At Executive Spa Group, our Beauty Career and Employment consultants have knowledge and experience to help you align reality with expectations.

Some information we like to prepare our students with is knowledge in employment laws so that you understand your rights and responsibilities as an employee.

Reading and keeping your pay stub is a good habit. Your pay stub provides important information including your EI and CPP contributions. It’s always a good idea to track your hours so that you can read your pay stub.

Reading your pay stub can be pretty confusing, especially when it comes to all of those deductions.

Employers must deduct on your behalf from YOUR OWN wages the following:

1. Employment Insurance aka “EI”

Like it’s name says, this is insurance you pay every pay cheque in case you are laid off or become ill, or your parents or child become ill, or you have a child and can no longer work.

***NOTE: you do not qualify for EI if you are fired or quit your job.

2. Canada Pension Plan aka “CPP”

This is money that your employer must pay on your behalf from YOUR OWN wages. This money goes into a “savings account” and you only have access to it when you turn 65 years old. If you choose to retire early you may in fact access your CPP, however, you will be penalized by receiving a lesser amount than if you would have waited.

3. Taxes- this money is deducted from YOUR OWN wages to pay towards making Canada the great country we know and love. It goes to pay for all sorts of things, like our education and healthcare system, fixing our roads, providing social programs, etc.

The amount of taxes you pay depends on your marital status and whether or not you have children.

Though all of the deductions can be infuriating when you receive your pay cheque, just think, on top of paying all those deductions, YOUR EMPLOYER must also pay additional EI and CPP out of their own pockets to be able to offer you a job.

In addition to paying your wages, your employer has to match the amount of CPP you pay, dollar for dollar, plus an additional 1.4X the amount you pay for EI. 😱

Makes one appreciate their employer just a little more, doesn’t it?

Manis and Pedis: A Good Skill to Learn.

Mani Pedi Course

Why are manicures and pedicures a good skill to learn?

…because there is more to Manis and Pedis than painting nails! Nail Technicians require knowledge in the muscular and skeletal system, knowledge in nail anatomy and diseases, as well as fine motor control skills.

Offering Manicures and Pedicures as a service requires your awareness and responsibility in keeping up with facility requirements and infection control.

It’s not all science though, you also get to paint nails!

Let your imagination run wild! Your Nail Art is your signature.

TIPS ON MARKETING YOUR SERVICE…FOR FREE

We wish you much success as you embark on offering this new service. Remember, word-of-mouth is the best form of advertising.

After careful psychological analysis, we concluded that a relaxing massage is amongst the top steps in your procedure to be remembered and bragged about by your clients.

Show off your massage moves.

-EXECUTIVE SPA GROUP-

Developing your massage routine will come with time as your confidence grows. We like to prepare you with a repertoire of moves to get you started on a budding beauty career!

  • Effleurage: Light – medium pressure is applied. Flowing pressure directed towards the core. Used to warm the muscles and connective movement between steps.
  • Petrissage: Medium – heavy pressure. Kneads muscle over the underlying bone. It aids in relieving pressure, tension, and heat the muscles.
  • Vibration: Quick shaking motion with med-heavy pressure. Loosens the muscles and relieves tension.
  • Percussion: Fast hacking or pounding motion using with firm pressure. Muscles are “shocked” into releasing tension. Incorporated into end of the massage.
  • Friction: Medium – heavy pressure. Rolls muscle against muscle itself. Aids in relieving pressure, tension, and heats muscles.

Learn this and so much more! Register for our Manicures and Pedicures Course.
